I read it a second time, recently, as I I first read this book as a sophomore in college, when I was grappling with some alcohol issues spurred on by having an older group of friends, attending a university with liberal drinking rules and “thoughtful” punishments for underage drinking, and the thrill of living on my own in a tolerant, safe environment where I could experiment at will.

No one identifies with images of people who are laid up with alcohol poisoning, vomiting, in various degrees of unconsciousness. One would think I’d remember that kind of fall, but perhaps the pain of it blacked me out.

I completely disagree with the author and the reviewers of this memoir. I was left with far more questions by the end of the book than when I began. Smashed chronicles Zailckas’ decade-long struggle with alcohol abuse, beginning at fourteen, in an effort to explain the binge drinking phenomenon that plagues America’s youth. Though sexual assault is certainly not predicated on alcohol use, is there a way in which alcohol does contribute to the situations Zailckas describes?

Her “Woe is me, cautionary tale, this is all so serious, look at how I can weave artsy-sounding phrases into my passages” tone is too heavy, suffocating what otherwise may have been an interesting book with its embarrassingly obvious fumblings towards “gravitas”. I can’t remember the last time he looked at me this unremittingly. Does she think of her experiences as unique? I was hugely impressed by this book, and am not entirely happy with these quotes, as I returned my copy to the library, and I am not a fan of reviewing after the fact.

I’m not sure that it will necessarily deter young girls from binge drinking, because young people are all about the now, and are going to do what they want to do in the moment.
