Another important thing to consider is that “Hika” is a lament in Japanese musical tradition from what I understand and so this piece in memory of Brouwer’s good friend, Toru Takemitsu, is really a sort of mournful elegy in his memory.
While there is an overarching “lament” feel running throughout, it may help to pick up the sections within the piece as separate “episodes of lament” and contrast them accordingly – and I feel that the composition has been “encoded” with interpretative clues for this to happen. There’s nothing wrong with pleasure is there?

This is a challenging piece, not necessarily because of the quick passages many of these are aided by the scordaturabut because of the difficulty of maintaining the appropriate feel throughout the various transitions. Always liked the piece.

I will report back when I have started learning the piece. I don’t know his sources and have not studied this myself, so I’d be interested to hear about it too!
