Drizzt is a dark elf, a Drow, raised in the caverns of the Underdark far beneath the surface of the Forgotten Realms. He avoided the common pitfall of giving elves and dwarves ridiculous Celtic accents, which would most certainly have ruined the story!

But, due to the nature of the genre, Salvatore never had a chance. Does the publisher dictate the content? This is particularly evident in some side shots amongst many others. This book is tge his youth and constant struggles for survival.

What is surprising is the characterization. I can see where in reams gaming situation, OTT characters such as these would be fun to play. I am not sure how much of it came from the author and how much from already existing standard Forgotten Realms settings, so I will not attribute all of it to Salvatore’s creative writing.

One example of how little sense Drizzt makes: It might be easy to pretend to believe a certain way and to talk a good game, but there would have come a moment, many moments, where he was called to act in a way in keeping with his society, and he would have balked.

The mass of villains were suitably evil and I was happy that R. When it was clear that there were none in Drizzt’s class who could beat him, the masters of the academy matched him against students three years above him.

And I really love it. One of the most distinctive aspects of this novel is the role that women play in the drow world.

This book had been on my to-read list for almost two decades before I finally decided to give it a chance.
