That’s what makes it easy for Ibbotson to tug so hard at my heartstrings both then, and now when things go wrong – badly wrong. Harriet returns to Manaus to say goodbye to the ballet company as they leave for the next stop on the tour, and returns to Rom’s house to find Henry waiting for her there, who informs her that his mother plans to marry Rom.


There’s only so many ground-breaking, out-of-your-box books you can read consecutively. I know very little about ballet, but the performance descriptions and poses were so fun to read about and then look up on the internet. The character’s were not particularly original or deep- Rom was basically a direct transposition of Mr. Dark, mysterious Rom reminded me of my favorite fictional crush of the moment, ibboston Nicholas Brisbane from the Lady Julia Grey series.

Was it all due to the wri An odd book, with some beautiful writing, and an absolutely spot-on-target evocation of the ballet life. We even saw a coatimundi. I admired her innocence, enjoyed the detail of ballet life and the intricate and laugh-inducing writing. The setting was the height of the rubber baron’s wealth in South America, so of course the author needed comoany include a section criticizing colonialism.

Seeing the meeting with Henry as a serendipitous, almost fairy-tale-like coincidence, Harriet is now determined to escape her family and join the ballet company on the trip to Manaus.

I confess I don’t know much about it, my semester was spent studying at Oxford. Not my favorite part, but I don’t care. In “ruining herself”, she not only ruins any sympathy the reader might have but any ubbotson that might have attracted Rom in the first place. HistoricalRomance novel.

Not exactly the Amazon, but tropical nonetheless. Completely unnecessary, not to mention hardly realistic. It’s fairly bland a lot of the time, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the love interest.

I know nothing about Brazil and very little about ballet, so Sawns might enjoy this when I need a break from more dark or educational stuff. Then the heroine’s decision made sense, her angry, desperate grasp at joy. There, lbbotson the wild, lush jungle, they perform Swan Lake in grand opera houses for the wealthy and culture-deprived rubber barons, and Harriet meets Rom Verney, the handsome and mysterious British exile who owns the most ornate opera house.

Class for the prima ballerina assoluta as for the youngest member of the corps.
