The Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski
Written by Sundar Narayan. I had doubts that anyone could produce a series to match Civilisationbut Bronowski made something that might even be better. The author was a mathematician, so look for special coverage in that area, but he did not neglect other facets of applied science. While this was an eventual advantage, is was not always so; things like climate change forced us to migrate or face annihilation. Related to this, Bronowski deplores what he calls “the aristocracy of the intellect,” scientists who move away from the needs of people, and into the arms of government, industry and corporations.
Yes, there are some parts of this that are outdated. There is lots more that I have missed no doubt a really really interesting book that was made into a BBC series also and definitely worth a read.

I give the book 4 stars because at some moments you realise that the book was not really written as a book but as material for the TV series. Jacob Bronowski was a British mathematician, biologist, poet and playwright. I am sure that I’ll like this one too.
When people believe that they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they behave. Transcripts of the lectures were published posthumously in as The Origins of Knowledge and Imagination and remain in print.
In other words, I want to know if reading this will feel exactly like Cosmos, because I look for something new in every book.
The Ascent of Man is the companion book to the BBC documentary of the same name; Eo didn’t realise this when I bought it I haven’t seen itbut I remembered I knew of its existence upon reading the introduction.
