Ebrey’s book gives an excellent overview of Chinese history, something many books struggle with, and manages to not only do this but also alongside, give insight into culture, arts, politics and key Drama and the Performing Arts.


Whatever your interest in China — history, politics, religion or art — this book will serve as a launchpad for the reader starting at zero.

The book might sound daunting but at around pages it quite succinctly covers the different eras and is full of fantastic pictures of items and places from antiquity up to the present day.

I solved this problem a little by printing out a map and the timeline used on the wikipedia article on Chinese dynasties and used these two pieces of paper as bookmarks.
