Despite the many often heavy religious references — mostly to Catholicism but also to Islam — teens will be able to follow Gregory’s flowing plot thanks to her progressive characters. Cast out of his religious order for using the new science to question old superstitious beliefs, Luca is recruited into a secret sect: I don’t think I will bother to read any more of this series, as I don’t really care much for the characters or for what happens to them next.

At the very least, a more descriptive writing style could have breathed some life into the story but It lacked emotion and drive, plodding along with no real direction. Read at your own peril. Phillippa was not the series I expected and I will not be continuing on with it.

I could over look these portions if they were not representative of the writing as a whole, but depressingly, they are.
It’s a sloppy and anachronistic mess of a book, and one that doesn’t leave much hope for the rest of this series. There are a few other characters, too. So they can calculate to nothing, and beyond.
